Able House
Moving Ltd. - Company Profile
Campbell River, BC, Canada -
Operations, 1979 - 2000
Able began moving houses in the late 1970's
under the name Able Building Movers. The first few projects were setting up residences and
rentals then advancing to custom moves, trailers, commercial buildings, schools and
eventually boats.
The business was purchased in 1984 by Mr.
Keith Barr who relocated it from McCauley Road to a leased yard at Perkins Road and
operated as Able Transport where they continued to expand collecting more trucks and
equipment.
In 1987, an acreage was purchased at the
south end of Peterson Road. A shop and outbuildings were completed within the first
year with the help of Leif Peterson's developing carpentry skills. Prior to this, Leif had
experience operating heavy duty equipment primarily in the construction of roads. More
recently, Leif had been commercial fishing, operating a gillnet through what turned out to
be the last really lucrative sockeye runs in BC. Fishing had come naturally as the
Peterson family had pioneered April Point Lodge on Quadra Island. Leif's father, Thor
Peterson, a realtor and land developer, influenced the purchase of the first project, a
relocated house to a vacant lot. This project led to another and another amongst extended
travels throughout Asia, Australia, Central and South America. The equity generated in a
strong BC economy led to the purchase of 50% shares in A.H.M. Able House Moving, Ltd.
which operated a short time as a partnership until the balance of the shares were
purchased in 1994.
In 1995, Able House Moving successfully
relocated two large school buildings in Gold River while buying and selling homes from the
Lower Mainland and relocating to the islands and outlying communities via marine barge. A
relationship developed between Supreme House Moving of Maple Ridge and Island House Moving
from Victoria which is maintained today.
In 1999, after several years of failing
economy, a decision was made to relocate operations to a more prosperous part of the
country. After much research and perseverence, Edmonton, Alberta was identified as being
the best place to base its new operations. Plans for the company include servicing Red
Deer/Sylvan Lake area in the south extending north to Grande Prairie and possibly Fort
McMurray.
Mr. Peterson's expertise both in the moving
and setting up of relocated dwellings and structures should become a resource beneficial
